Private Joseph Shaw

 

Joseph Shaw was born on 10 March 1899 at Loughconnelly, Broughshane, County Antrim, the eighth of fourteen children of labourer Thomas Shaw and his wife Ann (née Simpson). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Breckagh, Longmore, County Antrim, with his parents and four of his siblings.

Shaw enlisted in the North Irish Horse in January 1918 (regimental number unknown). He served at the regiment's reserve depot at Antrim until the end of the war, and was demobilised in 1919.
